The Knightly News – Council 11091
From the Grand Knight’s Desk
Worthy Brother Knights!
Well, it’s almost September. Kids are off to school, whether it’s elementary, high school or college. Hard to believe that our youngest of 4 is entering her final semester of college, the 11th fall that we have sent kids off to college. Now maybe I can start paying down college debt instead of going deeper in!
August was another busy and successful month for the Knights. The alter server appreciation party was held on August 8th, co-chaired by John Wolak and Rene Mendez. I only stopped by for a few minutes, but it was a nice night and it looked like a good group. The Hammer Open was on the 16th. Our new chair, Tom Walker, took over this year with plenty of assistance from Scott Nejman. From preliminary reports the event raised lots of money for the four charities supported, Bear Necessities, Foundation Fighting Blindness, Rett Syndrome Association of IL, and It’s All about Kids. A big round of thanks goes out to Tom, Scott, and all the other volunteers, participants, and sponsors as well as to Mary and Juergen Huellen who previously chaired this event since its inception. We also had a new event – cooking for Parent Pick-up Night at St Margaret Mary School. Mark Ostrowki chaired this event, which he estimated was attended by 250-300 people! A great way to make the Knights presence known. Our last big outdoor food event for the season was the St Margaret Mary Summerfest on the 23rd. Rene chaired this event, with assistance of course from the lovely Joanne and a host of other volunteers. We kept the menu pretty simple and it was a fun and low stress event to work. The weather was perfect, after a morning rain, and a good time was had by all. The profit from this event will be donated to the parish.
We also have several events coming up in September. The 12th is the 2nd Annual Charity Softball Tournament between the Knights and 2 local fire departments. We are still looking for more players – please contact Ray Mueller, and we will need volunteers to man the food booth. We will have a blood drive on the 13th in McDonnell Hall. I KNOW that we, as Knights, can increase our participation – let’s go for 100 units! This may be the easiest and most direct way that most of us can help save a life. If you haven’t donated blood before, please consider it; it’s only about an hour out of your day. Please also encourage your eligible family and friends. The ID Drive (Tootsie Rolls) on September 18-20 is a major fundraiser for helping people with Intellectual Disabilities. Please sign up for a shift near your home. It is a very nice family activity, and it certainly doesn’t hurt donations when your children are holding the can and asking people to donate to the cause. Also on that weekend we will be selling Vocation Raffle Tickets and Clergy Appreciation Dinner tickets after all masses.
September is also a good time to get your spiritual house in order. Come to church for the Knights rosary after 7am mass on the 6th. We will also have a Knights Prayer Service for those in need or in distress at 7:30 pm in the Ministry Center on the 7th.
Our next council meeting is on Thursday September 3rd at 7:30pm at the Ministry Center. Whether you are a new Knight or one of the elders, we love to see you at the meetings. It’s one of the best ways to learn what’s going on in the council, volunteer for our various activities, and to meet and socialize with many of your Brothers. If you want to be more involved, this meeting is your best opportunity to make it happen. See you there!
Vivat Jesus!
