Worthy Brother Knights!
As usual, summer seems to be flying by! I hope that all of you are well and taking some vacation time to be with your families. Of course the Knights never rest completely with some of our biggest events in July and August. July 11th saw our 4th Annual Pig Roast. As always the food was delicious, but the weather could have been better. Some threatening storms probably chased away people who should have been enjoying the food and fun we were offering. However, Founder’s Days this last weekend came off as a resounding success! We sold lots of food and beverages to the point that our worthy chairman had to go out shopping for almost all of the items we were selling, and most of that was sold by the end of the festival! The founder’s committee named our council as the “Honoree” and presented us with a plaque. Your humble GK, along with Terry Hoelting rode in a car near the front of the parade. As usual, an Honor Guard, followed by our council banner, the Tootsie Roll behind the Big Yellow Truck/Pirate ship, and a group of St Margaret Mary School families (in place of the Cub Scouts) were also in the parade. A big round of Thanks goes out to all of the volunteers at the festival who helped to set-up for the event and to man our food booth, and especially to the committee who spent weeks in advance in planning, shopping, and prepping.
August is also shaping up to be a busy month, with the alter server appreciation party on the 8th, The Hammer open on the 16th, and St Margaret Mary Summerfest on the 23rd.
On a spiritual note, a large group of youth from St Margaret Mary attended the Steubenville Catholic Youth Conference in Springfield, Missouri. They were supported by our council and chaperoned by several Knights parents. This is always a wonderful event for these students to delve deeper into their faith and share with each in the Holy Spirit, before they go away to college.
However, July also had some sad news. A member of this council Donald LeMieuz passed away at the age of 90. Donald is the father of Jim Bronson. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.
Last month the Knights of Columbus announced that a new record was set for 2014 with over $173 million in charitable donations and over 71.5 million hours of service. “These numbers show that the Knights of Columbus has the courage to make a witness to charity and to practice fraternal outreach to those in need,” Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said. Thank you all for your contributions to what our council contributed to these amazing numbers. We must, as individuals and as a council, strive to continue to evangelize through charitable works and membership growth.
Please try to think of a Catholic gentleman that you know and invite him to become a new Knight of Columbus at our upcoming 1st Degree on August 20th. New ideas for events, whether they be fundraisers, direct charitable work, or family events to bring us closer as brother Knights are always welcome.
