The Knightly News – Council 11091
From the Grand Knight’s Desk
My Worthy Brother Knights!
It’s March, a month of dramatic change. The weather goes from wild to mild. I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of the bitter cold, and we’ll most assuredly get dumped on with snow once or twice more. Those of us with a few sets of Christmas lights still frozen onto bushes will be glad to finally get them stashed away until next fall. Just as God delivered the rainbow after the flood as a sign of His covenant with the world, and resurrected His son as His gift to mankind, we will experience a rebirth in the natural world beginning in the month of March, and continue throughout spring.
We’re now in the heart of Lent, and our preparations for Easter continue. The Knights are deeply involved in numerous activities throughout Lent, of both secular and sacred nature. These events include our fish frys, prayer services, the Shamrock Shave, our Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, Paintball, and more. While these events are transpiring, many of our other committees are already busy planning the events for the upcoming months, including Knights at the Races, the IL State Kamporee, Founders Days, the Hammer Open, blood drives, and more. We’re also routinely discussing special one-time projects, which can be very impactful and quite rewarding. There is no shortage of opportunities for Knights to get involved.
Stepping up for just one event a year can make a big difference. Please contact a chairman, director, or officer if you wish to help with a specific program, or if you are willing to help where the need is greatest. Don’t assume things will get done as they always do. We need more men than ever to maintain our slate of programs. We need to replenish talent that is lost. We need fresh ideas and new sources of energy.
The best way to get involved is to come to a meeting and speak with other Knights, to learn where your interests and the needs of the council intersect. Study the calendar and read the articles to learn more about our programs. Then get involved in a program, event, or committee. We are much stronger with you than without you. Most activities require no experience or specific expertise. Our only expectation is that you are interested in helping. Take a step forward in the month of March.
Easter is a time to be humble, and thankful. When you celebrate Lent through fasting and abstaining from meat on Fridays, think about why you are doing this. Don’t give up a Friday steak dinner only to exchange it with lobster instead.
We are imperfect. Our imperfections often result in pain and sorrow. Our imperfections make us doubt ourselves. Our imperfections are fuel for Satan, and he wins when we let our imperfections let our hearts go dark, in anger, malice, despair, or feelings of hopelessness. Yet the Lord, in His perfection, offers all of us the promise of the afterlife — an eternity of perfection. Do yourself a favor. Please go to Reconciliation as part of your preparations for Easter. I know it always raises my spirit.
“So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.” – 1 Corinthians 15:42-44
Have a safe and happy March.
Vivat Jesus!
