From the Grand Knight’s Desk:
Brother Knights!
“Summer time, and the livin’ is easy…” Ahhh, that’s the dream. The cool drink on the porch swing, tending the roses and tomatoes, taking in a baseball game, the ol’ rope swing at the swimmin’ hole. Maybe we squeeze those things in amongst all the other activities and commitments. But Knights are always busy, and July has been full of activity.
At the School, the Knights DIDN’T paint for the first time in many summers, as Mrs. O’Hearn asked some of the school families to pitch in, but she did hint that there may be some opportunities ahead for the Knights to wield our brushes and rollers in the future.
Nick Wake and a few others ran the Junior Panthers Basketball Camp for 3rd and 4th grade boys and girls, teaching basic skills to nascent ‘hoops dreamers.’
Our biggest activity in July is Founder’s Days. It’s a fun event, but needs a lot of helping hands to plan, set up our booth, and serve our delicious food to our festival-going friends and neighbors and, when it’s all over, take everything down, clean it and put it away for our next event. This year’s event was marked by beautiful weather, good crowds at spacious Spella Park, and for the first year, fireworks at the fest
grounds on Sunday night. This of course meant our tear-down had to be on Monday – relying on more Knights volunteers. But Knights are ever-generous of their time.
Mikey Kouvelis led the parade plans, and designed and built our float with the help of a number of Knights. The theme was Honoring Our American Heroes, and our award-winning float honored our fallen American service men and women. Our Fourth Degree Color-guard led us, sporting their new uniforms, and Patrick Ryan piloted our Tootsie Roll wagon which was a big hit with the community.
August will present many activities for our community and charitable efforts, beginning with Adopt-AHighway on Saturday August 3, a Blood Drive, a First Degree, and the Hammer Open Golf Outing and of course (I know you are still thinking baseball) Football Mania! Of course, all of these are open to nonKnights, so ask a friend, or friends, to join us!
In the Gospel, Jesus tells us that if your friend doesn’t join you because of your friendship, he will join you because of your persistence.
“And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
Vivat Jesus!
