From the Grand Knight’s Desk:
Brother Knights!
Brothers, in our council, January and February are generally relaxed months. After the busy, rejoicing months of Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas, we’ve had time to catch our breath and gather ourselves.
The beginning of February is time to take stock and prepare ourselves. Like the contestants in the Super Bowl, we review old game film, we examine what went right, and what we could have done better – we prepare and pre-game.
As a council, we review old game film. We report to the State our fraternal volunteer hours of our many activities in support of Faith, Family, and Community. I can tell you that the number of Knights and our Families who have given precious hours of our lives to help others is truly humbling. Could we have done better? Absolutely! We resolve to do more and do it better in 2020.
We are fortunate to be a part of such an active and loving Parish. There are over 70 ministries at work in our parish, and there are Knights active and supporting in all of them.
Ash Wednesday is February 26, and then we enter Lent. During Lent we re-commit ourselves to the Trinity, and remember the bittersweet Passion, Death, and triumphant Resurrection of Jesus. We focus on making ourselves worthy of Christ’s sacrifice and the gift of eternal life He offers. I’ve tried “giving up” things for Lent, with generally poor results (Beer was my most spectacular failure –
Duh, St Patrick’s Day). It’s probably a better idea to take up something – more prayer, more quiet time with God, more Rosary, more actively working for God’s glory.
Find a Ministry that speaks to your heart and get to work. Father McGivney has provided a whole garage full of brooms, mops, buckets, and shovels for the good work through the Knights.
We’ve got three Fish Frys coming up that can use many hands, we’ve got the next level of the Free Throw competition coming up on Saturday Feb 8th. The Shamrock shave rears its shaven head in just a few weeks. We have a Major Degree scheduled here at SMM on March 1st. We are rolling out some new prolife and patriotic car magnets very soon. All these things can use your help and participation. None of our activities are a major burden to volunteers, and most are fun!
“That Man is You” is not a “Knights” event, but it’s put on by the Parish, and it’s full of knights. It’s Free, it’s rejuvenating, and rewarding. If you feel the need to “give up” something for Lent, I suggest giving up an hour of sleep on Saturday morning, and investing it in examining what it takes to be a true Catholic gentleman, and spiritual Leader in today’s society.
We welcome your ideas and input for new activities which support our platform of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. If you have some ideas, or questions, please join us at the General Meeting on February 6th, and our Officer’s meeting on the 20th.
Vivat Jesus!
